Phishing is a cybercrime which involves luring individuals into providing sensitive information, like passwords of online bank accounts and/or credit card details. This information is then used to commit theft which results in financial loss to the victim.

How can you avoid becoming a victim of phishing?

Always…

  • Keep your password a secret and change it regularly.
  • Refrain from using cyber cafes to access your online accounts.
  • Avoid typing in your password in unknown computers.
  • Log-out when you exit net banking to ensure that your secure session is terminated.
  • Keep your computer secure by installing anti-virus software and keeping it up to date.
  • Keep your computer secure by installing a firewall.
  • Be alert when reading banking/credit card related emails.
  • Most importantly, refrain from revealing any personal information over the net since banks do not seek such details in this fashion.

What if you fall prey to a phishing attack?

If you have been conned by fraudulent e-mails and have revealed passwords, personal banking/credit card information.

  • Immediately reset your passwords
  • Enable 2 factor authentication
  • Contact your bank’s customer service
  • Report the fake site to cyber police or CERT-IN.
